haha... good call. i don't know about hoboken. for all the buzz that it contains, and it has a lot to offer, it's just too much. i'd rather go across the river. perhaps i'm generalizing a bit, but it just seems like for the ride in and the cost of parking and the cost of bar hopping from one crowded bar to another, surrounded by north jersey guidos and fashionistas really isn't worth time or effort. maybe it's different if you live there, but partying there for the night just seems like a very 21st b-day thing to do.

wow. i thought i was gonna get a lot more grief for posting that. i went to stockton college but i'm from north jersey. i fell in love with south jersey. the bars and people are more exciting. north jersey has a very tough attitude and sometimes it's complicated when trying to meet girls.

Maxwells is a good time in Hoboken, they get a bunch of good bands and its an awesome place to see a show.
River Street wasn't bad for the simple fact if you wanted to dance you could go there without having to deal with the snootiness of NY clubs. As far as I know, River St. never had a dress code. I know I wore cargo shorts in there once to meet up with some friends. A similar club in NY and I would have been waiting out on the street for them.
My favorite bar in Hoboken has to be Scotland Yard. No guidos or whathaveyou down there. You get a good crowd, they have a decent selection of beer and booze, and their bartenders are top notch. If you've never seen it, its underground next to Green Rock. You can't miss the red British-style telephone booth that marks its entrance.
Overall though, I agree. Hoboken sucks. Its overrated, and NYC offers a much better experience. You can walk up and down 2nd ave and have just as good a selection of bars as Hoboken, without the guidos/yuppies and the overcrowding. And the bars are open later. I stopped going to Hoboken except for rare occassions about 2 years ago, switching over to NYC, and I've probably gone to at least 60+ bars in NYC in that timespan, and I havn't looked back.
There are plenty of good bars in Jersey, but Hoboken has become way overrated for what it actually offers.
Except Hoboken Pizza. You simply cannot beat it after a night out at the bar. Its Hobokens best trump card

I live in Hoboken and I love it! But when it comes to bars on a Friday or Saturday night, I stay away. Like you said, way too crowded, snobby, and "guido."

Yeah, I really don't get all the hype of Hoboken. I am not into people who think that they are top shit but when the lights come on, they are ugly as can be!

yo what standards are you holding hoboken to? Diversity in types of bars, price of drinks, entertainment venues, type of crowds, travel time/accessability? I dont think anyone has the right to blast hoboken or applaud hoboken without setting a criteria first. dont you think? perhaps a generic ranking chart should be made available to your readers/websurfers? anyhoo, this site is a pretty cool idea but you could do a lot more with it. hope to see you expand this little thing you got going. (I love the bar map!) Peace!

Compared to the hype. A lot of people seem to think Hoboken is THE place to go in Jersey for a night out, but it doesn't live up to the hype. Maybe when you turn 21 and you don't know any better, but it quickly loses its appeal.
I think it fails on a lot of fronts.
The diversity of bars is relatively good, probably the best you'll find in NJ in so small a locations. You have a lot of varied options.
Price of drinks tends to be high, but it really depends where you go.
As far as entertainment venues, Hoboken has Maxwells, which is an excellent venue. Not much else, but how many towns in Jersey can claim more than one venue?
Types of crowds are where it really loses points. I realize this is a NJ bar forum, and that some posters here are probably the exact people that I'm talking about, but hoboken bars tend to be filled with the worst of what NJ is stereotyped for. Guido meatheads, girls trying their best to look like Paris Hilton, Yuppies flashing expensive watches, and golddigging whores trying to land a rich boyfriend. Don't argue, you know its true. Madison Bar & Grill is a perfect example. Guys have to be 25 to get in (graduated-college-and-have-a-job age). Its pathetic.
And travel time / accessability? Sure, you can get there in no time, but good luck finding a place to park. You can spend an hour trying to find a place to park, or you can pay $20 for a garage. If you head out to Hoboken any time after 10PM, you might as well head straight for the garage and not bother trying to park. People complain about getting into the city, but you can park for free in Harrison and take the PATH in for $1.50 and be there in 20 minutes.

Here here! Where in North Jersey is good though? I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. I like to be able to play pool, put a few bucks in the juke box, hear some live music and meet some people when I'm out. That's why I like local bars and try to stay away from Hoboken.
And Burboun Streeet can eat me too. It's like the frat party that never ended in there.
For good times in North Jerz, go to Mexicali Blues Cafe in Teaneck. Always good live music.

Asbury Park?? That's the only town/city in Jersey that I can think of that has more than one GOOD venue, but then again I listen to punk rock and hardcore soooo.

Nope. Come close to closing plenty of times but they are still open.
Hopefully they don't go the way of the Birch Hill.
