Again........ You people are so fucking ignorant!  I'm not going to repeat myself but it is uneducated, functionally illiterate, incompetent morons like you who piss me off everyday! Are you the scum bags who do 60 in the left lane?? I would assume so! If you don't like going to a bar and leaving smelling like an "ashtray".. THEN DON'T GO!!!!!!!!!!!!! No one is forcing you to go........ It's your choice.. just as it is your choice to NOT enter!! Why can't you simple minds comprehend something that simple.

This guy needs to calm down.  Maybe he should go to a local bar, have a drink and smo...o wait you can't.  Sucks for you.  If you've got a problem with not being able to smoke in bars, THEN DON'T GO!!!!!  No one is forcing you to go......  Stay home, smoke all you want, and continue to bitch about it.  That just means that there is more beer for me when I go out.

Okay NJ Legislature is a crock of sh** when it comes to this Anti Smoking bit.  So you mean to tell me that small and/or large business owners and restaurants, and so forth, are banned from allowing smoking in THEIR own place of business.  Give them break when they have to pay the already outrageous taxes to keep their businesses open.

Now im all for personal safety but this is a bit over board to me.  Now the way I see it not just smokers will feel this burn but the small bars and restaurants with smoking sections and regular dinning sections in them will.

Now to step aside from smoking for a minute and get back to small businesses, the casinos are already killing them, all of A.C.’s casinos to be exact, this is going to be a mom-and-pop-financial-holocaust.  Whose to speak up for the A.C. bars and restaurants which will lose business due to the amount of people, whom go there to relax, drink, smoke and get away from the “outside world?”  To simply put it: people want to have a good time.

So the big money casinos shelled a lot of money to make sure they were secure with the ban not being brought onto their front.  In the process many establishments have had to shut down realizing that business would struggle through the summer months.  What’s next?  NJ Legislature bans alcohol from New Jersey bars and restaurants.  This goes hand in hand and I don’t think any of the Anti Smokers who applauded and supported this ban realized what they have done to and what they are going to do to the economy and livelihood of many non state owned businesses.

I am outraged by the carelessness these people have demonstrated to the state of New Jersey and the other states that have allowed this ban to fester its way into our society.  There are better ways of dealing with smoking in and/or around public places, but this is not one of the better solutions nor is it a close second or third

Not to mention our personal rights have been once again threatened upon by our own government.  Who are we to trust to take care of New Jersey?  The state we live in, we were born in.  Whether you’ve been here your whole life or is a new resident to the Garden State we all need to come together and make use of what democracy we really have.  And I’m sure to many of you I’m being over analytical.  And yes I’m only 20 and I do not know nearly as much as someone who’s older than I, but I sure as hell know that I’m going to stand up firmly in what I believe in.

P.S. the funny thing about this ban is that it was started by concerned casino employees who were questioning their health from all of the indoor-secondhand smoke. (Read my 3rd and 4th paragraph)

So what does anyone think?

I don't know about you, but this ban is not only annoying but it's founded on a rediculious premis .
First off - why can people in South Jersey smoke in CASINOS , but not in bars Huh? Are gamblers less improtant then drinkers ? Or is it that they dare not mess with the money that gambling brings in ? hmmmmmm.....

Secondly : ever notice an establishment of ANY KIND that has a sign " we have the right to refuse your business  for any reason "  ??
Then how come if I PAY FOR and I BUILD , and I DESIGN   MY BAR/PIZZA PLACE /CLUB whatever..
I cant put a sign up that says I CATER TO SMOKERS HuhHuh?
as long as there is a PRE WARNING TO PEOPLE COMING IN that there WILL BE SMOKING INSIDE , this should be ok .
This law FORCES me to cater to NON SMOKERS . Having a New Business is so tough to begin with . Now YOU get to dictate what clientel I have to cater to Huh??
thats Bull !

OK, I am very new to this forum, but I have read through all the replies to this topic. I see that this has obviously been beaten to death, and as I'm sure all of you have experienced whether you work in, or just hang out in ANY bar, it has been THE topic of conversation for like 6 months now. Personally I am sick to death of it. I just wanted to add my own two cents real quick.

First, I am a bartender. Yes, I smoke. No, the ban doesn't bother me. Yes, it sucks, but I deal. I can definitely see both sides, but it's nice to scratch my head and not come away with black fingernails. I am definitely smoking less because I can't leave the bar every 10 minutes, and when you are busy (either working or having fun) you tend to not even think about it.

However, my main standpoint from the very begininning was this...

Nobody goes to a bar to be healthy.

Either way thanks for hearing me out & I look forward to becoming much more involved in these forums. Smiley

PS - I am absolutely appalled to have signed up to find out that there is a spell check option and people still manage to have such atrocious spelling and grammer. Wow.

The other night, at this bar in Morristown, I sprung up a conversation with the bouncer. I noticed he had a 'shiner' so I said something to the effect of "Bobbed when you should have Ducked huh?" and he laughs some looking at me and goes "This god damn smoking ban." He proceeded to tell me the story of where it came from about two drunks fighting outside, which turned into two groups, the doorman outside was over powered by the 'mob' of them and he ( the bouncer I spoke with ) was blindsided when he went out to break it all up.

He went on to tell me how Jersey Bars were different than any other bars he has ever worked in ( a southerner ) and it was hard enough to keep scuffles down before the State decided to start letting drunks go outside away from the couple dozen sets of eyes watching them.

So I went on with my night, yada yada yada, and as I was leaving I watched a number of bouncers race toward the front door, and as I got outside a couple police cars, kids in hand cuffs, and my buddy the bouncer talking with a police officer.

Walking past him I smiled and said "Fucking Smoking ban" he turned over and was like "Fuckin A"

Well speaking as a smoker, I wasn't thrilled with the ban and in essence I think its discriminating against smokers. I can totally understand at restaurants bc I hate being around smoke when I'm trying to eat. But if anything the bars and clubs should have regulations established rather than an overall ban. So it's not a big deal now bc we can all go outside to smoke but what about when its -20 outside? Or what about the bars and clubs that won't let you re-enter after leaving for a smoke. In most cases you have to leave your drinks behind, so now while you're smoking you have to worry about what's happening to the drink or you have to drink it faster so you can go outside and then possibly loose your spot at the bar. Its completely annoying and inconvenient. To make everyone happy they should just require better air circulation in the establishment or if they can't, have something set up for smokers or better yet, let the establishment decide what they want. I mean forcing something like this on the public isn't entirely fair. There are plenty of non-smokers who went out to bars and clubs being around the smoke and not caring but now all of sudden its this whole uprising. I've read some others opinions on the other forums about this and my basic overall opinion is, everyone knows and accepted that a bar or club has smoking, whether its from smokers or from the smoke machines, its part of the scene, kinda like how bars and clubs have the potential for fights which can be bad for your health. And seriously, in the area we live in the air isn't exactly fresh and clean where going to a bar or club once or twice a week is going to kill you.
I think morbidxtc6  said it best- nobody goes to a bar to be healthy... They go to relax with some friends and let off some steam.

sweetheart, nobody could've said it any better..now for the morbidxtc chick, i get wut ur sayin 'cause i am a former bartender,waitress...but where i worked u were not allowed at all to be seen by your clientele and have a cig in your hand...maybe society has actually influenced me ...i dont wanna see a bartender or waitress with a cig in their hands....however, i am a smoker...i wish i wasn't at all...i tried to stop but i flipped out on my people (i'm an admin aide in a gym) lol god did i feel for those kids so i'm back at my regular rate... i'm half n half about the smoking ban.. if you're in a restaurant, why the hell would u put your children in the smoking section?!?  is it my fault i smoke...well yeah....but if u have a restaurant where u obviously strategically place people upon their own preferences why should u worry about the well-being of someone if their own parents don't care...as a smoker, i hoped i could've smoked less......with no option around...i feel a need to smoke just 'cause i know i can't...its almost like if you're tryin to quit...if u have a pack of cigs, u smoke but mentally you're ok if you have 'em on hand ....when i dont have a pack or a potential smoker in the area...i freak for some reason!!  well as for business...everyone  will lose as they did in ny but smokers will b there to say fuck it (sorry) .... now we have to deal....oh yeah....lol i know i may sound dumb here but i remember reading about the "dublin" ban 2yrs ago and laughed my ass off..i had no idea that it would've came into reality....now, the 25ft rule... is that still goin on in court or is that extinguished?

As a non smoker I love it. I see there are many different opinions of this issue. Yes, I didn't like to came home and feel like i needed to take a shower b4 i went to bed. That is nice about it now. I do feel bad for the people who do smoke and once winter hits. Most people who do smoke try to stay away from the non smokers anyways. The body smells are different story. This is just my opinion.

I agree with the ban in restaurants where smokers and non-smokers alike are there to have a meal, and as a smoker, I do prefer to eat without any smoke spoiling it. Restaurants were and are a place where you go to EAT... not to hang out for 4-6hrs, you go in, enjoy your meal & company, tip the nice waiter/waitress and go on with your life... the end. Bars in the other hand, were ALWAYS a place you go to drink, smoke and hang out with your buddies or girls!  It's a smoky loud place! That's what a bar is supposed to be! If anyone had a problem with it, the choice would have been very simple - the freedom of choice we could all exercise - to go, or not to go! Smoking is hazardous to our health, so is drinking, fast-food, city pollution, and so many other elements we all endure because it's part of our lives! How ridiculous would it be for someone to complain about going to McDonald's to have a salad, and get home smelling like greasy burgers??? "Those damn meat-eaters! They're making my clothes stink!" Silly isn't it?
I find that most people who are so glad and alleviated since this anti-American law went into effect are usually the ones who can only list self-centered reasons as to why it's a good idea! I've read posts in this forum such as: "I'm glad to get home from the club and not feel like I have to take a shower!" Are you kidding me? If you dance and sweat, it would be, perhaps, a good idea to shower before sleep anyway, regardless of an individual's sense of hygiene, Is that a valid reason to infringe on the freedom of everyone else that went to a bar/club for what it offered? You gotta be kidding me! Seriously! Bartenders complaining about patron's second-hand smoke (sorry guys)  - there's a good one! You pick a profession in an unhealthy environment, for a decent living! It was your choice! If it's not a good living, try a different profession! Am I expecting to hear mechanics complaining about greasy nails, or carpenters complaining about the dust and the heights? No! That would be absurd, wouldn't it? It's part of the Job!!
In all, I know this ban has been in effect in many other states, and people got used to it. I am getting used to it, doesn't mean I'm happy with the outcome! I am also aware that California - where this trend came from, has DESIGNATED AREAS in their clubs/bars - just like some airports - for some of us that enjoy smoking and drinking! Have you been to NYC lately?? How often do some bars allow people to light up later in the evening?? Quite often if you ask me!
A compromise is never a bad thing, clubs with more than 1 dance floor, in my opinion, should be allowed- at the owner's discretion - to have a smoking floor/area. Bars should remain smoking.
Some non-smokers who state how glad they are that they can now enjoy smoke-free clubbing/ bar-going, were still going to these places to have their fun, regardless of this extreme inconvenience... That didn't stop them. Nowadays, I know of a few bars/clubs that are taking a major financial hit by losing part of the smoker crowd who don't stay and drink all night like they used to, and that's if they're going at all.

So the outcome, people are now enjoying different smells in the bar scene - stale beer, sweat, etc..., some smokers are not hangin' around as much, some bar owners are hurting, which will eventually result in higher admissions and/or bar prices, and a few people are happy that they don't smell like an ashtray! Welcome to the land of the free! Enjoy your ride!
Stay tuned! Next time, drinking will be banned in bars, because people want to dance, play pool and listen to the good ol' jukebox without the smells of alcohol, loud crowds or intoxicated people talking to them. Heh heh.
I'm putting out my cigarette and going to sleep! Good night, and see you soon!

Ah, I was against it at first, but got used to it. The State took my rights away, oh well, there are bigger problems to worry about ... like Corzine sneaking taxes in on everything. Taxing Taxed Money, I love it.
