I have done just about everything in the bar industry.  I have been mainly managing and promoting for the past 6 years and will tell you that bar tending school doesn't mean jack.  I can teach everything you learn in bar tending school in half an hour and won't charge you $350 to do it.  I would rather have a bar tender who has never been behind a bar before, than someone who went to bartending school because they don't have any bad habits.  Here's where you can start, get an empty liquor bottle, put a pour top on it (without one of those stupid timing balls,) and work on a 3 second pour (which is equivalent to 1 shot.)  That is one of the most important things to a bar manager because that is where money is made and lost.  If you're a heavy pourer, you won't last 3 seconds in my bar.  Then, go to your local watering hole and tell your friendly bar tender that you would like to learn how to bar tend.  Do this when it's slow, and I'm sure they'll be more than happy help because it will help them pass the hours.  Make sure you get an ABC card if it is required within your particular municipality if the bar tender lets you pour drinks, which you can get at the local police station that the bar is located in.

i went to that authentic bartending school in eatontown, NJ.... it was ok..... it doesnt really help in getting a good bartending job though.... heres my problem, i have zero restaraunt/bar experience so any bar i would go to they wouldnt hire me cuz i had no experience... i thought about lying a few times but i didnt wanna start bartending just like that and then not know what im doing and have the manager say "i thought u bartended before"..... i have had different jobs on and off the past couple years but nothing in bartending.... in the past year not ONE bar would hire me and its crazy.  These bars all want previous experience but how am i supposed to get any experience if nobody would hire me!??!?!    anyway, if anyone has any idea of how i can get a good bar job, please let me know.... im all outa ideas... thanks

Well, I mean, say what you want about bartending schools, but a freind of mine went to Bartending school a couple years ago and the majorty of the Bartending Jobs he has gotten were all Highclass resturants and is doing extremely well for himself.

But maybe he is an exception, I dont know, I can find out the name of the school he went to if anyone wants to know.

I went to bartending school and it has gotten me nowhere.  I don't think I learned anything new there and I still can't find a job.  The general feedback I get from bars is that they want real experience not schools.  I just wish I could get some experience.  I wouldn't waste the money if I were you but if you're a bar owner I could sure use a job.

ppl can have a college degree and bitch about it being a waste of time and not helping them get a job.  school is only worth what one takes away from it. i went to bartending school 8 yrs ago.  scince then i have paid my way through 4 yrs of college, bought a brand new car (cash), lived very comfortable, met the most interesting ppl, and had a blast partying. i am a manager/bartender and i don't believe i would have gotten where i am today if it weren't for bartending school. it was the best $350 i ever spent!
